Community Reminder – Lock your Doors

The Auburn Police Department would like to remind the residents of our community, if you are going to leave valuables in your vehicle, keep them out of sight and lock yours doors.

Items that include GPS units, iPods, cameras, purses and other valuables if left in your vehicle should be kept in a secure location like a locked trunk or glove box. If you do choose to leave these items in your car then make sure all windows and doors are locked and make sure you have the model and serial numbers of these devices written down and stored in a secure location so in the event they are stolen and recovered, Police can return the property to their rightful owner.

Since the beginning of 2012 the Auburn Police Department has responded to over 30 larcenies from vehicles. Most of these incidents were the result of the vehicle doors being left unlocked but there have been numerous incidents where a window was broken out in order to gain entry into the car to commit the larceny. These crimes of opportunity are made easier when the doors or windows are left unsecure and nine times out of ten if they are secured a thief will not make the effort to break a window especially if there is nothing of value in plain sight.

These tips are also good to keep in mind regarding your home as well.  Make sure to secure your garage at night; don’t leave valuables like bicycles or lawn mowers in the front yard. Leave a light on to discourage a potential thief from prowling your property and always secure your doors and windows.
