    Introduction

Domestic violence shouldn’t happen to anybody. Ever. Period. But it does—and when it does, there’s help. Maybe you’ve lived with abuse, maybe experienced it just once; maybe you work or live next to someone who is being abused right now. Whoever you are, this book can show you how and where to get help.

In 1994 and again in 1995, the State of New York changed the laws that deal with domestic violence to make it easier for the victims of abuse to get protection through the legal system.

We have tried to include everything you want to know, everything you’ll need to get help, get safe, even get out of an abusive relationship.

You just need to remember two things: first, battering’s never okay; second, you’re not alone.

If this book applies to you, call us. Help is yours for the asking.

If you know someone—a friend, family member, co-worker, client, patient or parishioner—please pass this book on or see that he or she gets a copy.
