K-9 Unit
The Auburn Police Department’s K-9 Unit is comprised of two handlers and two highly trained German Shepherd partners. Officer A. Kalet is assigned to K-9 Dara, a 6 year old black and tan German Shepherd originally from Czechoslovakia. Dara was welcomed by the Auburn Police Department in June of 2010 following the death of K-9 Rony from an unexpected fight against cancer.
The Auburn Police Department’s second K-9 Team is Officer Carnicelli partnered with K-9 Rayn. Rayn is a 5 year old black German Shepherd originally from Czechoslovakia. The K-9 Teams have completed their patrol / tracking and narcotics detection training with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Academy.
At this time, Officer Kalet and K-9 Dara are assigned to the 2000 – 0400 (8PM – 4AM) shift, while the other Team, Officer Carnicelli and K-9 Rayn are currently assigned to the 0800 – 1600 (8AM – 4PM) shift. This maximizes their availability to the two busiest shifts. When the K-9 Teams are not on a regular patrol duty they are on an on-call status and can respond from their homes to scenes, county-wide within minutes. In addition to their regular patrol duties, the handlers and their partners continuously train on a monthly basis in order to maintain their proficiency in their selected areas of work.
